😌 Calm Before Exams

O-Level anxiety is one of the most intense academic pressures you'll face at this age. But anxiety managed well becomes a performance amplifier — here's how to make it work for you, not against you.

Calming Techniques

The Night Before

  • Stop all new studying by 8 pm. Instead, do a 20-min walk — exercise reduces cortisol.
  • Lay out all exam materials: pens, pencils, calculator, IC, admission slip.
  • Eat a real dinner. Skipping meals spikes cortisol and impairs cognitive function.
  • Shower and do your night routine — rituals signal to your brain it is safe to relax.
  • Sleep by 10 pm. REM sleep in the final hours consolidates procedural memory — exactly what you need for exam technique.
  • Read something non-academic for 20 minutes to decompress before sleeping.

On Exam Day

  • 1Wake up at your normal time if possible — disrupting sleep cycles causes grogginess.
  • 2Eat breakfast rich in protein and slow-release carbs (eggs, oats, fruit).
  • 3Arrive at least 15 minutes early. Rushing triggers the fight-or-flight response.
  • 4In the exam: read ALL questions first. Your brain processes answers subconsciously while you tackle others.
  • 5Time management: spend 2 minutes planning before writing. Structure = marks.
  • 6If you freeze: put your pen down, close your eyes for 10 seconds, do a physiological sigh, then write ANYTHING — momentum beats perfectionism.
  • 7Post-exam: do not discuss answers. It is over. Protect your mental state for the next paper.
You've got this. One question at a time. 💙
